Dear sirs

Hi friends,

This morning my friend and collaborator Katie Hoogendam (Merkat) wrote a substack that left me weeping, and then had me running for my guitar. This song was born today, inspired by Merkat’s writing (which you should go read here).

Dear sirs it’s nice to meet you
hope you’re having a good day
I won’t take much of your precious time
But there’s something I just had to say

I know the world is churning fast
I know folks could use a break
Lots of people find relief in the
Shortcuts you create

But firewood heats you thrice
Isn’t that nice?
Isn’t that nice?
Easy has a price
Isn’t that right?
You know that’s right

I’ll take friction any day because
it’s friction that makes a flame

Dear sirs I know it’s hard to make
a profit off the free
And you’re so smart you’ve made an art
Of selling things that no one needs

But some of us value the effort
it takes to write a song
to formulate our own opinion
to raise our babies safe and strong

Firewood heats you thrice
Isn’t that nice?
Isn’t that nice?
Easy has a price
Isn’t that right?
You know that’s right

I’ll take friction any day because
it’s friction that makes a flame
