Can you feel it? The overnight switch to summer brain that happened this weekend? The shuffling of the calendar so that “clean out gardens” and “bonfire” hopped to the top of the priority list and anything business as usual dropped right off the page? Victoria Day long weekend, you are a beauty.
Though it happens every year, I am always surprised by how quickly and spontaneously the mental switch occurs. I think that everything is plodding along as per usual, and I wonder if this will be the year where I just keep working and trucking along through the summer without shifting gears as much as usual.
Then the first sunny, warm day hits, and my brain dissolves and reforms itself in an entirely different shape. My brain does the caterpillar to butterfly transition in approximately 30 minutes. It’s wild.
I am suddenly hard to get ahold of by email. I am suddenly outside being social several evenings each week. I am suddenly seeing people I’ve barely spoken to since last September, through the return of weekly 3-pitch games and last-minute bonfire invitations.
I am suddenly gripped with the desire for chip truck french fries.
Summer me has arrived. She is happy to be here. She has big plans for a slow and local season filled with friends and family. She is getting quite excited for lilacs to bloom, but she is patiently waiting to plant her tomatoes outside because she has been fooled before and she doesn’t want to experience that heartbreak again.
If you need me, I’ll be by the pool.
Upcoming Shows
After several years away from singing in choir, I am so excited to be part of a new, six-woman vocal ensemble called Field Notes. We’re sharing our first-ever show on Sunday, June 14 at Black Cat in Cobourg. If you’ve been there you know it’s a beautifully intimate space, so we’re performing at both 6pm and 8pm with only 20 tickets available per show.
