Make Like a Mother

Make Like a Mother, my new adventure in podcasting, is about to be released into the world - and I want to tell you all about it!

Why a Podcast? Why This Podcast?

As many of you know, I am the mother of two phenomenal teenagers. What may be less visible from the outside is the fact that I have completely shaped my artistic career around raising them. Every decision I make is done with them in mind, and in the last year I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how they influence and shape my work.

On the one hand, having kids introduced constraints. Have I really never wanted a touring career, or could I not imagine it because of my kids? Do I actually feel satisfied working part-time, or is that just the amount of time in the day available to me once the family stuff is taken care of?

On the other hand, having kids introduced countless new viewpoints, new experiences and new ideas. Would I be so passionate about social justice and the climate without kids? Would I be so good at holding boundaries and protecting my time and energy if I wasn’t doing it on behalf of my family?

The more I thought about the intersection of my own artistry and motherhood, the more I began to think about all the women who are in the same boat. It made me want to talk to those women, and it made me want to share their stories with the world.

Thus the Make Like a Mother podcast was born!

I hope you’ll love my conversations with nine mother artists as much as I did. The show launches Saturday May 9th with a live taping featuring Trish Dryden and Janita Wiersma, as well as a special art and music bonus featuring Meghan Sheffield and supported by Christy Flindall, Hugh Stewart, Lee Vittetow.

Grab your tickets for the live taping here.

Episode one will be available online May 10th, Mother’s Day. (I’m nothing if not subtle.) I’ll provide links to find and follow the show online very soon.

Hope to see you at the live taping!

P.S. I cried yesterday morning filling out a bus opt-in form for the last time for my son, who will be in grade 12. Motherhood and perimenopause double-whammy right there.

Featured Song - It All Depends

This one’s new and tender, and she’s got a beautiful crankie box companion show. Thank you to Meghan Sheffield for making something so special and for being so open to a collab. Thank you also to Lee Higginson and Community Power Northumberland for capturing these photos at the first ever performance.
