I am writing to you from a chaos vortex (somewhat) of my own making. In the midst of parenting two teenagers who seem to need 20% more attention and time than I ever actually have, at the exact same moment that my husband hops into a combine and rides off into the harvest season sunset never to be seen again (until mid-December), whilst simultaneously volunteering for and performing at my favourite yearly festival and volunteering as campaign manager for the best future mayor Cobourg could ever want…I decided to start a masters.
What’s that like, you might ask? The first word that comes to mind is messy. Very, very messy. I am drowning in readings full of words I’ve never heard and don’t understand (subaltern, anyone? Aporia?) while simultaneously trying to meal plan for the week, figure out my kid’s upcoming volunteer schedule and doctor’s appointment, rescue my laundry off the line after 48 hours (should be good and dry, I guess), and be useful at the volunteer roles I’ve signed up for. I don’t know my ass from a tea kettle…though I do know that’s not exactly the expression I’m looking for. Meh, it stays.

In any case, it’s madness up in here but, truthfully, there is a gleeful glint in my eye as I contemplate my assignment due dates, my annotations and project statements. I have a schedule full of my priorities and interests for the first time in nearly two years. It’s also still full of the priorities of my husband and kids, but now my life has a spot on the page. That seems to be the tipping point that sends my family off a cliff, but at least I’m doing something fascinating while we fall over the edge.
